The Kohinoor diamond came into the possession of Maharaja Ranjit Singh when Shah Shuja Durrani, an exiled Afghan ruler, sought his help to regain the Afghan throne. In 1813, Shah Shuja handed over the Kohinoor to Ranjit Singh as a political price for military and diplomatic support.
